Closing Ceremonies

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us live (in person and virtually) for the closing ceremonies of the 2021 Office Olympics! The event was livestreamed via YouTube (through the Student Multimedia Studio's channel) and is available now for viewing.

Calling all Office Olympians!

2021 marked the 7th Summer Office Olympics event sponsored by University Libraries.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 7th Summer Office Olympiad was held at a smaller scale and primarily in person. However, there were hybrid options depending on the logistics of each competition. View the Olympic Schedule of Events page for details.

Important Dates

  • Opening Ceremony: Monday, August 2 in the Garden Room (11:30 a.m. EST)
  • Series of Games: Monday, August 2 through Monday, August 9 (12-1 p.m. EST)*
  • Closing ceremony and awarding of the medals: Wednesday, August 11 (12 p.m. EST)

Venues were located throughout the University Library and its nearby territories on the Kent campus.

Eligibility

Eligible athletes included:

  • All employees, retirees, and volunteers of Kent State University Libraries (at all locations and campuses)
  • Everyone who worked or volunteered in the University Library Building on the Kent campus
  • Children and other special young people of eligible athletes (grandchildren, nephews, nieces, etc., etc.)

Opening Ceremonies

EVENT: Tokyo Diskus Throw あきらめないで

  • Time: Immediately following the Opening Ceremonies
  • Location: Outside, on Manchester Field
  • Officiated by: Cindy Kristof, Mindy Farmer & Lori Boes

An Office Olympics tradition; the athlete with the longest throw wins.

  • GOLD: Michael Hawkins (Map Library) - 81'
  • SILVER: Nick Fagan (Architecture Library) - 72'5"
  • BRONZE: Kelly Riley (Serials) - 70'7"

Tuesday, August 3

ALL EVENTS TAKE PLACE FROM NOON AND 1 P.M. EST

EVENT: Toss Your Cookies (A.K.A. "Toss Your Mochi") お腹がペコペコ, Day 1

  • Location: Basement Hallway, University Library
  • Officiated by: Communications Office

We’re sure that many Olympians have been very nervous and lost their cookies before an Olympic event, so the name of the event is "Toss Your Cookies"! Contestants will throw up their cookies to win points and perhaps become the Olympian to win the gold! (Plenty of mops and clean-up supplies will be available for those who may lose their cookies!)

EVENT: Diving at Pearl Island マーメイド 飛沫

  • Location: Outside the University Library, adjacent to the Garden Room
  • Officiated by: Tammy Voelker and Anita Slack

Divers will stand on a step ladder above the Mikimoto Pearl Island cove and drop paperclips, trying to hit the target below which is segmented into different areas/point values. Each diver will drop 6 paper clips and their total score will be recorded by the judges. In the event of a tie, divers may be called back for a dive off. Top three scores will medal.

  • GOLD: Pam Lemmons (Deans Office) - 125 points
  • SILVER: TIE: Steph Gaskins (Reserves) and Nan Garrison (volunteer with Technical Services) - 115 points
  • BRONZE- Mary Lovin (Communications Office) - 75 points

Wednesday, August 4

EVENT: Toss Your Cookies (A.K.A. "Toss Your Mochi") お腹がペコペコ, Day 2

EVENT: Yumenoshima Park Archery けがをしないでください

  • Location: 1st floor Marovitz Gallery seating area, University Library
  • Officiated by: Cindy Kristof and Chris Brooks

Using only hands and rubber bands, brave athletes will target and topple CD cases from a marked distance.

Thursday, August 5

ALL EVENTS TAKE PLACE FROM NOON AND 1 P.M. EST

EVENT: Periodical Pagoda Ping Pong 激烈な競争, Day 1

  • Location: May 4 Room, University Library

This is table tennis rules with one exception: the "regulation paddle" is a bound periodical! This is a 3-day tournament event.

EVENT: Origami Airplane Throw 紙で指を切った

  • Location: 3rd floor Hallway, University Library
  • Officiated by: Deans Office

Precision folding skills and a good aim are key as athletes compete for the longest flight of their paper airplanes.

Airplane Throw results:
  • GOLD: Mary Lovin (Communications Office) - 29' 2 1/4"
  • SILVER: Doug Kubinski (General Counsel) - 20' 5 1/4"
  • BRONZE: Jen Rice (Acquisitions) - 17' 7 1/4"

EVENT: Kyoto Bowling on the "K" 強く投げる

  • Location: Risman Plaza, on the "K"
  • Officiated by: Special Collections & Archives

The goal of the game will be to knock down all the pins by rolling a special ball across the long arm of the "K" in the pavement of Risman Plaza.

Bowling on the K results:
  • GOLD: Hilary Kennedy (SMS) - 9 points
  • SILVER: Mindy Farmer (May 4 Visitors Center) - 6 points
  • BRONZE: 4-way tie, 5 points each: Pam Lemmons (Dean's Office), Avery Richardson (student employee in SMS), Nan Garrison (volunteer in Technical Services), Kimberly Schwab (Mailroom)

Friday, August 6

  • GOLD: 2-way tie at 3 CDs each: Tammy Voelker (Research & Instructional Service) and Kelly Riley (Serials)
  • SILVER: 2-way tie at 1 CD each: Pam Lemmons (Dean's Office) and Cynthia Williams (Communications Office)

EVENT: The Mt. Fuji-Ramen Chopstick Challenge 食い倒れ

Use chopsticks to stack Ramen cups. Speed and dexterity will be key to winning this new competition!

(translation: "Shibuya Crossing Putt-Putt")

Athletes will demonstrate their hand-eye coordination as they compete for gold!

Closing Ceremony and Awarding of Olympic Medals

  • Time: Noon
  • Location: 1st floor Garden Room, University Library
  • Lunch will be provided by the University Libraries Executive Team; email Cynthia Williams at cdwillia@kent.edu by noon on Monday, August 9 to RSVP. UL Faculty, staff and student employees are invited! Employees are also encouraged to bring a dessert to share.
  • Join virtually via YouTube Livestream (stream will commence at 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11)
