Black Landscapes Matter
by
Walter Hood; Grace Mitchell Tada
The question "Do black landscapes matter?" cuts deep to the core of American history. From the plantations of slavery to contemporary segregated cities, from freedman villages to northern migrations for freedom, the nation's landscape bears the detritus of diverse origins. Black landscapes matter because they tell the truth. In this vital new collection, acclaimed landscape designer and public artist Walter Hood assembles a group of notable landscape architecture and planning professionals and scholars to probe how race, memory, and meaning intersect in the American landscape. Essayists examine a variety of U.S. places--ranging from New Orleans and Charlotte to Milwaukee and Detroit--exposing racism endemic in the built environment and acknowledging the widespread erasure of black geographies and cultural landscapes. Through a combination of case studies, critiques, and calls to action, contributors reveal the deficient, normative portrayals of landscape that affect communities of color and question how public design and preservation efforts can support people in these places. In a culture in which historical omissions and specious narratives routinely provoke disinvestment in minority communities, creative solutions by designers, planners, artists, and residents are necessary to activate them in novel ways. Black people have built and shaped the American landscape in ways that can never be fully known. Black Landscapes Matter is a timely and necessary reminder that without recognizing and reconciling these histories and spaces, America's past and future cannot be understood.

Eco-Architecture VIII
by
S. Hernández (Editor); P. Chias (Editor)
New opportunities for solving the challenges of contemporary architecture occur as a result of advances in the design and new building technologies, as well as the development of new materials. Many of the changes are motivated by a drive towards eco-architecture, trying to harmonise architectural products with nature. Another important issue is the adaptation of the architectural design to the natural environment, learning from nature and traditional construction techniques.Contemporary architecture is at the threshold of a new stage of evolution, deeply influenced by the advances in information and computer systems and the development of new materials and products, as well as construction processes that will drastically change the industry.Never before in history have architects and engineers had such a range of new processes and products open to them. In spite of that, the construction industry lags behind all others in taking advantage of a wide variety of new technologies. This is understandable, due to the inherent complexity and uniqueness of each architectural project. Advances in computer and information systems, including robotics, offers the possibility of developing new architectural forms, construction products and building technologies which are just now starting to emerge.Changes have also taken place in the way modern society works and lives, due to the impact of modern technologies. Patterns of work have been disrupted and changed, affecting transportation and the home environment. The demand is for a new type of habitat that can respond to the changes and the consequent requirements in terms of the urban environment. This volume originates from the 8th International Conference on Harmonisation between Architecture and Nature and deals with topics such as building technologies, design by passive systems, design with nature, cultural sensitivity, life cycle assessment, resources and rehabilitation and many others including case studies from around the world.

Moscow Monumental
by
Katherine Zubovich
An in-depth history of the Stalinist skyscraper In the early years of the Cold War, the skyline of Moscow was forever transformed by a citywide skyscraper building project. As the steel girders of the monumental towers went up, the centuries-old metropolis was reinvented to embody the greatness of Stalinist society. Moscow Monumental explores how the quintessential architectural works of the late Stalin era fundamentally reshaped daily life in the Soviet capital. Drawing on a wealth of original archival research, Katherine Zubovich examines the decisions and actions of Soviet elites--from top leaders to master architects--and describes the experiences of ordinary Muscovites who found their lives uprooted by the ambitious skyscraper project. She shows how the Stalin-era quest for monumentalism was rooted in the Soviet Union's engagement with Western trends in architecture and planning, and how the skyscrapers required the creation of a vast and complex infrastructure. As laborers flooded into the city, authorities evicted and rehoused tens of thousands of city residents living on the plots selected for development. When completed in the mid-1950s, these seven ornate neoclassical buildings served as elite apartment complexes, luxury hotels, and ministry and university headquarters. Moscow Monumental tells a story that is both local and broadly transnational, taking readers from the streets of interwar Moscow and New York to the marble-clad halls of the bombastic postwar structures that continue to define the Russian capital today.

Lateness
by
Peter Eisenman; Elisa Iturbe; Sarah Whiting (Preface by)
A provocative case for historical ambiguity in architecture by one of the field's leading theorists Conceptions of modernity in architecture are often expressed in the idea of the zeitgeist, or "spirit of the age," an attitude toward architectural form that is embedded in a belief in progressive time. Lateness explores how architecture can work against these linear currents in startling and compelling ways. In this incisive book, internationally renowned architect Peter Eisenman, with Elisa Iturbe, proposes a different perspective on form and time in architecture, one that circumvents the temporal constraints on style that require it to be "of the times"--lateness. He focuses on three twentieth-century architects who exhibited the qualities of lateness in their designs: Adolf Loos, Aldo Rossi, and John Hejduk. Drawing on the critical theory of Theodor Adorno and his study of Beethoven's final works, Eisenman shows how the architecture of these canonical figures was temporally out of sync with conventions and expectations, and how lateness can serve as a form of release from the restraints of the moment. Bringing together architecture, music, and philosophy, and drawing on illuminating examples from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Lateness demonstrates how today's architecture can use the concept of lateness to break free of stylistic limitations, expand architecture's critical capacity, and provide a new mode of analysis.

The art of gathering : how we meet and why it matters
by
Priya Parker
"A bold new approach to how we gather that will transform the ways we spend our time together--at work, at home, in our communities, and beyond. In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive--which they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play. Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings--conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp--and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience. The result is a book that's both journey and guide, full of exciting ideas with real-world applications. The Art of Gathering will forever alter the way you look at your next meeting, industry conference, dinner party, and backyard barbecue--and how you host and attend them"-- Provided by publisher
John S. Chase-The Chase Residence
by
David Heymann; Stephen Fox
The low-slung brick home that architect John Saunders Chase completed for his own family in 1959 was Houston's first modernist house with a true interior courtyard, a form with which other progressive architects were only starting to experiment. It was equally radical that he built it at all. When Chase graduated from The University of Texas School of Architecture in 1952--the first African American to do so--no Houston architecture firm would hire him. Chase petitioned the state for special permission to take the licensing exam, becoming the first African American registered as an architect in Texas. By 1959, he ran his own thriving firm and had established a position of remarkable influence in Houston's social, political, and economic life. The Chase Residence, in both its original version and after a fundamental alteration undertaken in 1968, is a testament to Chase's accomplishments. Beautifully illustrated, John S. Chase--The Chase Residence examines how the architecture of this seminal but little-known house frames the life lived within it. It places the house in the larger context of Chase's architectural career and his times. The book is also intended for readers broadly interested in the relationship between American architecture and society.

Charlotte Perriand
by
Jacques Barsac (Editor); Sebastien Cherruet (Editor); Pernette Perriand (Editor)
- A sweeping overview of Charlotte Perriand's career, exploring the interrelation of art, architecture, and design in the work of this legendary 20th century modernist- Includes essays by her daughter, Pernette Perriand, and by Jacques Barsac, author of the Charlotte Perriand Catalogue Raisonn - Accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation from 2 October, 2019 to 24 February, 2020 on the 20th anniversary of Perriand's deathCharlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneer of modern design in France during the twentieth century. Her avant-garde vision was expressed in color, organic forms, and streamlined functionality, elements which are still at the heart of contemporary design today. Her furnishings were created from aluminum, rubber, chrome, leather, bamboo, and above all, wood; their appeal is timeless. This lavishly illustrated book, accompanying a major retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, explores how much in the vanguard she was in her use of materials, in her social and political awareness, and in her collaborations with artists, architects, and other designers. The show presents a global vision of her creativity, talent, and inventiveness, exploring her commitment to women and to a humanist design ethos that took into account the middle and working classes with an emphasis on rationalizing costs and space. This book, with essays by an international roster of art, architecture, and design historians, offers a plurality of perspectives and explores Perriand's creative legacy through the 20th century and beyond.
Showpiece City
by
Todd Reisz
Staggering skylines and boastful architecture make Dubai famous--this book traces them back to a twentieth-century plan for survival. In 1959, experts agreed that if Dubai was to become something more than an unruly port, a plan was needed. Specifically, a town plan was prescribed to fortify the city from obscurity and disorder. With the proverbial handshake, Dubai's ruler hired British architect John Harris to design Dubai's strategy for capturing the world's attention--and then its investments. Showpiece City recounts the story of how Harris and other hired professionals planned Dubai's spectacular transformation through the 1970s. Drawing on exclusive interviews, private archives, dog-eared photographs, and previously overlooked government documents, Todd Reisz reveals the braggadocio and persistence that sold Dubai as a profitable business plan. Architecture made that plan something to behold. Reisz highlights initial architectural achievements--including the city's first hospital, national bank, and skyscraper--designed as showpieces to proclaim Dubai's place on the world stage. Reisz explores the overlooked history of a skyline that did not simply rise from the sands. In the city's earliest modern architecture, he finds the foundations of an urban survival strategy of debt-wielding brinkmanship and constant pitch making. Dubai became a testing ground for the global city--and prefigured how urbanization now happens everywhere.

Perspecta 53 Onus
by
Caroline Acheatel (Editor); Paul J. Lorenz (Editor); Paul Rasmussen (Editor); Alexander Stagge (Editor)
Essays and projects examine the ethical questions and moral tensions that arise during the ideation, development, completion, and aftermath of the architectural design process. In architecture, ethics are malleable. In theory, the terms are rigid, yet the reality is elastic. While much of the built environment is ostensibly designed for an individual client's needs, architecture's effects reverberate politically, environmentally, and culturally, often in unexpected ways and far beyond the limits of any parcel or project. This volume of Perspecta--the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in the United States--considers the ethical questions and moral tensions that arise during the ideation, development, completion, and aftermath of the design process. Architecture operates on a temporal scale largely disconnected from social shifts. Although often bound up in power networks and funded by those who are most powerful, architecture has implicit obligations to those most vulnerable. Architecture's language, by making abstract concepts concrete, can reinforce or disrupt political, environmental, and social structures. Contributors from a range of geographies and practices offer insights, provocations, and questions about the dilemmas that architects encounter at every stage of designing the built environment: Whose architectural ideas get to become reality? What ethical role does form-making play in design? What moral burden must architects shoulder in the sheer act of building, and what is the future cost of today's refusal? Through arguments, essays, and projects that examine the issue at a range of scales--from the intimacy of a single material to the reach of global typology--Perspecta 53 explores the complex dynamics of architectural onus, and how designers can navigate conflicting agendas to pose new possibilities.

The Creative Architect
by
Pierluigi Serraino
Rarely has the architectural profession, or any creative discipline, undergone such close scientific scrutiny as it did during the 1958 inquiry on the creativity of architects. The directors of this study at Berkeley's Institute of Personality & Social Research masterminded an investigation that drew 40 of the greatest architects practicing at the time, subjecting them to three days of intensive solitary and group testing, in the idealistic pursuit of mapping their minds. Deploying an array of tests reflecting then-current psychological theories, the study sought to answer questions that still apply to creative practice today- What makes a person creative? What are the biographical conditions and personality traits necessary to actualize that creativity? For the first time, the study's findings have been gathered and analyzed through numerous original sources, including questionnaires, aptitude tests, and interview transcripts that show how some of the greatest American architects evaluated their own creativity and that of their peers. In The Creative Architect, Pierluigi Serraino charts the development and implementation of this historic study, producing the first look at an amazing and unknown episode in the annals of modern architecture.

Race and modern architecture : a critical history from the enlightenment to the present
by
Irene Cheng, Charles L. Davis II, Mabel O. Wilson.
Although race—a concept of human difference that establishes hierarchies of power and domination—has played a critical role in the development of modern architectural discourse and practice since the Enlightenment, its influence on the discipline remains largely underexplored. This volume offers a welcome and long-awaited intervention for the field by shining a spotlight on constructions of race and their impact on architecture and theory in Europe and North America and across various global contexts since the eighteenth century. Challenging us to write race back into architectural history, contributors confront how racial thinking has intimately shaped some of the key concepts of modern architecture and culture over time, including freedom, revolution, character, national and indigenous style, progress, hybridity, climate, representation, and radicalism. By analyzing how architecture has intersected with histories of slavery, colonialism, and inequality—from eighteenth-century neoclassical governmental buildings to present-day housing projects for immigrants—Race and Modern Architecture challenges, complicates, and revises the standard association of modern architecture with a universal project of emancipation and progress.

Construction 4. 0
by
Anil Sawhney (Editor); Michael Riley (Editor); Javier Irizarry (Editor)
Modelled on the concept of Industry 4.0, the idea of Construction 4.0 is based on a confluence of trends and technologies that promise to reshape the way built environment assets are designed, constructed, and operated. With the pervasive use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), lean principles, digital technologies, and offsite construction, the industry is at the cusp of this transformation. The critical challenge is the fragmented state of teaching, research, and professional practice in the built environment sector. This handbook aims to overcome this fragmentation by describing Construction 4.0 in the context of its current state, emerging trends and technologies, and the people and process issues that surround the coming transformation. Construction 4.0 is a framework that is a confluence and convergence of the following broad themes discussed in this book: Industrial production (prefabrication, 3D printing and assembly, offsite manufacture) Cyber-physical systems (actuators, sensors, IoT, robots, cobots, drones) Digital and computing technologies (BIM, video and laser scanning, AI and cloud computing, big data and data analytics, reality capture, Blockchain, simulation, augmented reality, data standards and interoperability, and vertical and horizontal integration) The aim of this handbook is to describe the Construction 4.0 framework and consequently highlight the resultant processes and practices that allow us to plan, design, deliver, and operate built environment assets more effectively and efficiently by focusing on the physical-to-digital transformation and then digital-to-physical transformation. This book is essential reading for all built environment and AEC stakeholders who need to get to grips with the technological transformations currently shaping their industry, research, and teaching.

Formed in 2008, Mercurio Design Lab (MDL) masterfully manages to express its design potential. Lead by Massimo, a rare architectural polymath who is motivated by a strong spirit of innovation, philosophy and experimentation, MDL seeks to elevate and balance the synergies of the Asian architectural context with indomitable Italian style and tradition.
MDL considers its projects as artistic masterpieces and makes a special contribution to the architectural scene of the city through the creation of dramatic and futuristic buildings, always respecting three fundamental criteria: the functional, the aesthetic and the social.
This richly illustrated monograph is a comprehensive review of MDL's exceptional artistry and diversity and it's another icon for IMAGES' Master Architect series, an absolute must for all collectors of beautiful books on sophisticated global architectural culture.
Massimo Mercurio hails from Rome, where seeing soul-stirring art, grand fountains, and centuries-old palaces are a daily occurrence. For an architect's son, who lived this routine for over two decades, a visit to the high-octane Asia - with its glittering skyline and vibrant melting pot - would become a life-changing moment that made him realise the vast potentials of Italian design beyond Italy. At the age of 24, Massimo experienced life in the region where he eventually settled. For close to three decades and while working within the Southeast Asia regional context, Massimo gathered his experiences in design, construction, architecture and project management and melded these with his interests in art, with focuses on both the theoretical and practical fronts.

Alexander Girard, Architect
by
Deborah Lubera Kawsky; Ruth Adler Schnee (Foreword by)
During the midcentury period, Michigan attracted visionary architects, designers, and theorists, including Alexander Girard. While much has been written about Girard's vibrantly colored and patterned textiles for Herman Miller, the story of his Detroit period (1937-53)--encompassing interior and industrial design, exhibition curation, and residential architecture--has not been told. Alexander Girard, Architect: Creating Midcentury Modern Masterpieces by Deborah Lubera Kawsky is the first comprehensive study of Girard's exceptional architectural projects, specifically those concentrated in the ultra-traditional Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe. One exciting element of the book is the rediscovery of another Girard masterpiece--the only surviving house designed entirely by Girard, and former residence to Mr. and Mrs. John McLucas. Restored in consultation with iconic midcentury designer Ruth Adler Schnee, the McLucas house represents the culmination of Girard's Detroit design work at midcentury. Stunning color photographs capture the unique design elements--including the boldly colored glazed brick walls of the atrium--reminiscent of Girard's role as color consultant for the GM Tech Center. Original Girard drawings for the building plan, interior spaces, and custom-designed furniture document the mind of a modernist master at work and are made available to the public for the first time in this beautiful book. Alexander Girard, Architect is a beautiful, informative book suited for enthusiasts of Alexander Girard, the midcentury modern aesthetic, and Detroit history, art, and architecture.

Balthazar Korab
by
John Comazzi
While Balthazar Korab's photography has been widely published in books on architecture, landscape and design, and his contributions to the representation of midcentury Modern architecture has been greatly celebrated, there has never been a publication dedicated exclusively to his life, career and practice. This book will be the first monograph on Korab and includes a broad and comprehensive presentation of his professional architecture photography. In addition to an extensive portfolio of Korab's architecture photography, Balthazar Korab highlights previously unpublished images--lesser-known (though no less significant)--produced throughout his career. An thorough, illustrated biography traces the evolution of Korab's sensibilities and practices as they developed in relation to his life experiences, his training as an architect--unique among his contemporaries--and his rather circuitous path to a career in photography places the collection of photographs into context. A foreword by Cesar Pelli offers further insight into the life of Korab.

KieranTimberlake - Fullness
by
Stephen Kieran; James Timberlake
KieranTimberlake- Fullnessdemonstrates the holistic impact of the work of the Philadelphia-based architecture firm. This monograph provides the concepts and contexts for seventeen recent projects in a range of scales and types, from houses to campus buildings to a transit hub and an embassy. KieranTimberlake- Fullnessdemonstrates how the firm's formative values have combined with innovative design methodologies, a commitment to full-scale, in-house prototyping, and a collaborative ethos to create and realize works of ambitious scope and complexity. Organized in two volumes, this book illustrated the comprehensive range of architectural beauty present in KieranTimberlake's buildings and the evidence for their mastery of design at all scales and orientations. The first volume presents photographs of each project, depicting the visual whole of the architecture as a fully resolved work. The companion volume reveals the sum of its parts-the pivotal junctures that give rise to final form, including both the moments of discovery and the pragmatic tools of analysis and prototyping that the firm uses. Narratives, drawings, diagrams, details, and anecdotes capture the design process and reveal the varied approaches that give form to the art and science of KieranTimberlake's architecture. Projects in this book include a house made from prefabricated modules in rural California that minimally disturbed its picturesque site; a major renovation of Philadelphia's Dilworth Park in front of City Hall; Cellophane House (TM), a fully recyclable, energy-gathering dwelling; and the new US Embassy in London, designed to signify democratic ideals and exceptional environmental leadership with systems to reduce energy consumption.
Eero Saarinen
by
David G. De Long; C. Ford Peatross
A timely portrait of the work of an architect who expanded the vocabulary of modern architecture. Eero Saarinen and Balthazar Korab constitute a unique team in the history of architecture: Saarinen, the mid-twentieth-century architect who challenged the architectural conventions of his time; and Korab, an architect in Saarinen's office whose perceptive photographs reveal the brilliance of Saarinen's work. This visual sourcebook illustrates nineteen Saarinen commissions in photographs drawn from Korab's archive, providing multiple views of the buildings themselves and some views of their construction and of architectural models that were critical to their design. Images of Saarinen's office and home provide personal ambience, and an introductory essay positions Saarinen's work within the broader context of his time. Seen in detail, such earlier works as the General Motors Technical Center (1948-56) or the Miller house (1953-57) show departures from orthodox modernism; Saarinen's assured handling of new materials and new building functions impart lasting value to his career, as seen in the Trans World Airlines Terminal (1956-62) and Dulles International Airport (1958-63), which have become iconic images. 464 pages of color including 800 illustrations plus a CD-ROM of all illustrations in the book.

Carl Pruscha: Singular Personality
by
Arno Ritter (Text by); Hertha Hurnaus (Photographer); Manjushree Thapa (Text by); Natalie Lettner (Text by); Iwan Baan (Text by); Lars Müller (Text by); Carl Pruscha (By (photographer)); Lars Müller (Text by)
This monograph on the work of Austrian architect Carl Pruscha (born 1936) is divided into the three geographical areas of his life and legacy: the United States, Kathmandu, and Vienna. Following his study of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Pruscha spent the early 1960s attending Harvard University s Graduate School of Design, constantly in search of inspiration and visions, a balance between work and free time, and a desire for freedom and self-determination. An invitation by the UN to go to Nepal in 1964 enabled him to establish himself as a practicing architect. Various construction projects along with the Kathmandu Valley Development and Preservation Project made it possible for him to observe and document, to plan and build. Living within a foreign culture encouraged him to examine roles, status, and privileges in society and investigate the works of Kenzo Tange and Louis Kahn. After returning to Vienna in 1978, he was a professor and later the head of the Academy of Fine Arts. Pruscha s academic and societal influence brought to light the differences between teaching and practice in architecture and made this activist and bohemian a defining figure in the city. The three chapters are accompanied by photographic portfolios by Iwan Baan and Hertha Hurnaus, numerous project documentations, and a detailed timeline that illustrates the geopolitical, cultural, and technological developments surrounding the life and times of Carl Pruscha. 150 images

OMA/Rem Koolhaas
by
Christophe Van Gerrewey
The activities of Rem Koolhaas and his staff were widely discussed even before the foundation of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975. Today, many contributions on the work of OMA can be found in the international architectural press, including Koolhaas' own writings. The book contains about 150 selected texts--interviews, feature articles, essays, lead articles, reviews, letters, introductions, appraisals, and competition reports that have been compiled for the first time. This compilation not only provides a fresh and critical view of the oeuvre of one the most important contemporary architects, but also represents an account of the debate on architectural and urban design in recent decades.

Francesco Dal Co; Nuno Graça Moura; Jorge Figueira; Giovanni Leoni; Carlos Machado; Rafael Moneo (Contribution by); Alvaro Siza (Contribution by)
"I look beyond solution; I look for an expression."--Eduardo Souto de Moura The architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (b. 1952) has won many accolades, including the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Based in Porto, Souto de Moura studied under Fernando Távora and worked under fellow Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, with whom he continues to collaborate. Souto de Moura established his own practice in 1980, and his wide-ranging influences, including Mies van der Rohe and Donald Judd, can be seen in the stunning variety of his work, from his acclaimed private houses, to the striking Paula Rego Museum in Cascais and the Braga Municipal Stadium, to his work in historical contexts such as the Convento das Bernardas in Tavira. This beautifully illustrated retrospective provides the most comprehensive account of Souto de Moura's career to date. Drawings, notes and sketches from his archive, and newly commissioned photographs complement essays by scholars and prominent architects that trace Souto de Moura's career, contextualize his work within the larger trends of contemporary international architectural culture, and highlight the originality of his design strategy.

Alvar Aalto (Artist); Pedro Gadanho (Text by); Marco Michelis (Text by); Eric Mumford (Text by); Ákos Moravánszky (Text by); Mateo Kries (Editor); Peter MacKeith (Text by); Dörte Kuhlmann (Text by); Mina Marefat (Text by); Jochen Eisenbrand (Editor, Text by)
The richly illustrated book is the first in many years to offer a comprehensive and current overview of Aalto's oeuvre as an architect, designer and urban planner. Ten authors, such as the renowned architectural historians Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Akos Moravanszky and MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho, address central aspects in Aalto's work. Particular attention is directed to Aalto's dialogue with important artists of his day, including L#65533;szl#65533; Moholy -Nagy, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand L#65533;ger, as well as his interest in film, cinema and photography whose influences on his work are examined here for the first time. The catalogue section presents numerous never-before-seen original drawings and architectural models from the archive of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The new contemporary perspective on Alvar Aalto is complemented with photographs by Armin Linke who documented a number of Aalto's buildings anew especially for this publication. As these images demonstrate: Aalto's work is as current and inspiring today as at the time of its creation.

Building the Caliphate
by
Jennifer A. Pruitt
A riveting exploration of how the Fatimid dynasty carefully orchestrated an architectural program that proclaimed their legitimacy This groundbreaking study investigates the early architecture of the Fatimids, an Ismaili Shi'i Muslim dynasty that dominated the Mediterranean world from the 10th to the 12th century. This period, considered a golden age of multicultural and interfaith tolerance, witnessed the construction of iconic structures, including Cairo's al-Azhar and al-Hakim mosques and crucial renovations to Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock and Aqsa Mosque. However, it also featured large-scale destruction of churches under the notorious reign of al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, most notably the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Jennifer A. Pruitt offers a new interpretation of these and other key moments in the history of Islamic architecture, using newly available medieval primary sources by Ismaili writers and rarely considered Arabic Christian sources. Building the Caliphate contextualizes early Fatimid architecture within the wider Mediterranean and Islamic world and demonstrates how rulers manipulated architectural form and urban topographies to express political legitimacy on a global stage.]]>

Chinese Brutalism Today
by
Alberto Bologna
China is the largest consumer of cement and concrete in the world, the use of which has peaked in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Used for the construction of extensive infrastructure and buildings, over the last twenty years renowned Chinese architects have been working in and studying the constructive limits and spatial and superficial effects of exposed concrete. In the process, they have created a wave of avant-garde architecture in China. Chinese Brutalism Today investigates the compositional, formal, and ornamental reasons for this architecture and its different surface finishes, from rough to smooth. This new wave of Chinese Brutalism is, in large part, a regional evolution and development closely linked to local construction processes and the available labor force. The finished tectonics represent not only a way to read the architecture, but also reveals the complex decision-making processes and planning that led from the conception to construction of these buildings.

Treehouses, Towers, and Tea Rooms
by
Mauro Pierconti (Editor); Masuda Akihisa (Photographer)
This book is an in-depth analysis from a formal, design, and cultural point of view of Terunobu Fujimori's entire architectural production to date. It is not a mere collection of his works, but an exhaustive review delving into many sources, which finally offers a complete critical interpretation of his work. Fujimori has made a name for himself in Japan by crafting beguiling little buildings that refuse to follow any of the usual rules. His hand-made structures look like the nests or cocoons of curious creatures, woven, whittled and thatched with organic, earthy materials that could have been scavenged from the forest floor.

Research Culture in Architecture
by
Cornelie Leopold; Christopher Robeller; Ulrike Weber
Research in and on architecture is as complex as the discipline itself with its different specialist fields, and therefore the results often remain unconnected. Research Culture in Architecture combines digital and analog research issues and demonstrates how important cross-disciplinary cooperation in architecture is today. The complexity and increasing specialization are elaborated on in the various chapters and then linked to the core of architecture, i.e. design. Scientists from the theoretical and practical fields present research results in the following subjects: "design methodology", "architectural space, perception, and the human body", "analog and digital timber construction", "visualization", "robotics", "architectural practice and research", and "sustainability".

Design with Life
by
Mitchell Joachim; Maria Aiolova; Terreform ONE
Design with Life chronicles the breakthroughs and projects of a nonprofit that is defining resolute new directions in socio-ecological design and other deep-seated intersections of synthetic biology, architecture, and urban systems. In the challenging context of accelerating climate dynamics, the core discipline of architectural design is evolving and embracing new forms of action. New York-based nonprofit Terreform ONE has established a distinctive design tactic that investigates projects through the regenerative use of natural materials, science, and the emergent field of socio-ecological design. This kind of design approach uses actual living matter (not abstracted imitations of nature) to create new functional elements and spaces. These future-based actions are not only grounded in social justice, but are also far-reaching in their application of digital manufacturing and maker culture. Terreform ONE tackles urgent environmental and urban social concerns through the integrated use of living materials and organisms.

Robotic Building
by
Gilles Retsin (Editor); Manuel Jimenez (Editor); Mollie Claypool (Editor); Vicente Soler (Editor)
The use of robots in architecture is already commonplace: robots automate processes that were previously done manually. Complex shapes are created with the help of 3D printing while autonomous swarms of robots construct complex buildings. How does the use of robots affect the resulting structures; how does it affect the thinking of architects who work with robots? Robotic Building answers these questions with several practical examples. A final chapter explores the idea of architect as robot, the fully-automated home and similar concepts in which the robot merges with its environment and becomes part of our experience.

The Building as Screen
by
COLANGELO
The Building as Screen: A History, Theory, and Practice of Massive Media describes, historicizes, theorizes, and creatively deploys massive media -- a set of techno-social assemblages and practices that include large outdoor projections, programmable architectural façades, and urban screens -- in order to better understand their critical and creative potential. Massive media is named as such not only because of the size and subsequent visibility of this phenomenon but also for its characteristic networks and interactive screen and cinema-like qualities. Examples include the programmable lighting of the Empire State Building and the interactive projections of Montreal's Quartier des spectacles, as well as a number of works created by the author himself. This book argues that massive media enables and necessitates the development of new practices of expanded cinema, public data visualization, and installation art and curation that blend the logics of urban space, monumentality, and the public sphere with the aesthetics and affordances of digital information and the moving image.

Façades
by
Oscar Riera Ojeda; Byron Hawes (Text by)
This fascinating sourcebook presents the most remarkable, beautiful, and innovative building façades in contemporary architecture. A building's façade sets the aesthetic tone for its entire design while serving a variety of functions, from regulating light and protecting against the elements to providing insulation for temperature and sound. This absorbing book details hundreds of examples of interesting and progressive façades from around the world. Presented in colorful double-page spreads, each façade is photographed from different angles and includes engaging texts that describe their significance. Readers can learn how traditional mashrabiyas in Abu Dhabi are being engineered to respond to light and to regulate heat, how a hospital in Mexico City has been constructed with "smog-eating" tiles, and how a "bio-adaptive" façade in Germany uses algae to generate energy and provide shade. Informative and accessible, this compendium is a highly useful resource for architects, engineers, and designers.

Wood Urbanism
by
Daniel Ibañez (Editor); Kiel Moe (Editor); Jane Hutton (Editor)
Wood holds a unique and timely lessons for urbanization, yet it remains inadequately characterized in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. From under-considered thermal properties to emerging manufacturing possibilities, from changing forestry regimes to larger carbon cycle dynamics, Wood Urbanism explores the unique material and scalar properties of wood, presenting it as a critical material for design today. It brings into conversation scholars and practitioners who focus on wood from a range of perspectives--from the working forest to the mid-rise building to the basic cell. Drawing from the inherent intelligence and depth of multiple disciplines, this book offers a transcalar perspective on the role of wood in contemporary urbanization--from the imperceptibly small to the confoundingly large. Play On
by
Alistair Fair
This book documents--and celebrates--Britain's contemporary theater architecture. It is about the conception, design, and delivery of spaces for drama between 2008 and 2018, a period of economic recession and financial austerity that has nonetheless seen a significant number of well-received theater-building projects. Intended not only for theater enthusiasts but also for individuals and organizations that may be contemplating a capital project of their own, Play On provides detailed "contemporary histories" of ten recent projects. It includes new theaters, like Liverpool's prize-winning Everyman Theatre and Cast in Doncaster, as well as major refurbishment and restoration projects such as the National Theatre in London and the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. Architects whose work is discussed include Haworth Tompkins, Aedas Arts Team, Bennetts Associates, Richard Murphy Architects, and Page\Park. An extended introductory section sets the case studies in their historical and contemporary contexts and draws out key themes, including sustainability, accessibility, and the need for theaters to be efficient yet welcoming public spaces.

Eileen Gray - Her Life and Her Work
by
Peter Adam
In this illustrated biography, we learn the origins of designer Eileen Gray and the details of her groundbreaking career. Gray began as a creator of opulent lacquer furniture and transformed into a pioneer of modernist design. Staying firmly independent, she developed a distinctive take on materials favored by fellow International Style designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Mies van der Rohe. Her talent made her an object of admiration among American expatriates such as Gertrude Stein, and her designs are now globally renowned--E-1027, the ship-shaped home she created on a cliff near Monaco, was hailed as a triumph of deluxe modern living and her Dragons chair fetched $28 million at an Yves Saint Laurent auction in 2009.This new edition of the biography by Peter Adam, the only surviving person to have been close to Gray during her later years, is a uniquely intimate survey of her life and work. Comprehensively updated and illustrated with material from Gray's personal archives--correspondence, photographs, and architectural sketchbooks--Eileen Gray tells the full story of her life and reveals fresh details about her largely overlooked paintings, exchanges with Le Corbusier, and the fate of E-1027, the first building she designed. This book will be a welcome resource for fans of Gray, as well as those who are interested in design.

R. Buckminster Fuller: Pattern-Thinking
by
R. Buckminster Fuller; Daniel López-Pérez
For Fuller, nature is the most exquisite technology we know; and what underlies all of his work is the quest to uncover nature's fundamental principles--in order to foster their manifestation as a pattern integrity 'for successfully regenerating all life aboard our planetary spaceship.'" -Jaime Lawrence Snyder, Lars M ller Fuller Series Editor The work of R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) is among the most extraordinary and inventive in 20th-century design and architecture, not least for its incorporation of a range of intellectual and technical disciplines. Fuller described himself as an "engineer, inventor, mathematician, architect, cartographer, philosopher, poet, cosmogonist, comprehensive designer and choreographer.'' R. Buckminster Fuller: Pattern-Thinking is a major reassessment of Fuller's legacy in the context of design, examining his singular vision of new conceptual models for design and architecture, alongside his ideas on their potentially world-altering consequences. Drawing extensively on his archive and with over 300 images, the book follows Fuller's explorations of geometry, language and intellectual property in their relation to design principles and pedagogy, organizing its survey of Fuller's work through parallel conceptual threads rather than in a linear chronology of his career. Daniel L pez-P rez is an associate professor and a founding faculty member of the Architecture Program at the University of San Diego. By way of several publications and curatorial projects, L pez-P rez has emerged as an authority on Fuller, having edited Fuller in Mexico (2015) and R. Buckminster Fuller: World Man (2013), the latter of which was picked as Design Book of the Year by Architect magazine. He was also the curator of a week of lectures and exhibitions on Fuller at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014.
