National Data

National Datasets are provided at a national level and may be additionally broken out into smaller geographies.

Many datasets already have some spatial references, while others need to have a geographic file linked or merged with them to be mapped effectively.

Data Layers for ArcGIS

These are updated for the 2012 ArcGIS 10.1 release.

ESRI Data & Maps Layers
This site provides US Census as well as world data layers. Some notable features are census tract boundaries, hospitals, schools, cemeteries, bodies of water, and USGS topographic map boundaries.
US Census Bureau Data
Download census and geographic boundary information from the US Census Bureau
TIGER Geodatabase 2013
The Census new TIGER Geodatabases that conatin geographic entity codes that can be linked to the Census Bureau’s demographic data using ArcGIS.

BRFSS GIS Data
Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System raw data from the CDC can be downloaded here in zip files for years 2002-2010.
CDC GIS Data Center
Use this site to access to datasets, and perform dynamic mapping within CDC data. Each disease or illness area has its own data which can be downloaded as well with accompanying statistics.
Community Health Status Indicators
Reports county level statistics. From United States Department of Health & Human Services.
Earth Explorer USGS
Earth Explorer allows the user to set site criteria and see the available satellite and radar imagery for various environmental topics: Landsat, vegetation, forest carbon, LIDAR, land cover, EROS data, etc. Imagery can be downloaded.
EPA Geospatial Downloads
Various agency data in GIS formats on environmental indicators. CSV format
Federal Data by Agency
This link lists each Federal Agency and links to the datasets available, marking raw data, tables and spatial data.
Health and Human Services Data Downloads
Use these files on health care availability and expenditures together with a geographic file in a GIS.
Health Indicators Warehouse
Allows viewing, download of tables or maps by geography of various health related indicators. This site is a cooperative project of several departments and agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Kids Count Data
Annie E Casey Foundation yearly reports on Child indicators across the country. Raw data can be downloaded at many geographic levels.
National Atlas Data
This is the downloads page for the National Atlas including topics Agriculture, Environment, Biology, Geology, Government, Climate, and Water. Data is provided at the 1:1,000,000 scale.
National Center for Education Statistics
Collects, collates, analyzes, and reports complete statistics concerning the state of American education. Also reviews and reports on trends in international education.
National Map

The U.S. Geological Survey consolidates information from local, state and federal agencies to seamlessly integrate many layers of georeferenced data into this national map. Find and print the map, or download the data associated with the area you have found.
ResDAC Research Data Assistance Center
This is the big data available from Medicare and Medicaid patient information. This information has been de-identified (no personal information is left). It still contains many characteristics such as zipcode and demographic information of recipients. Some of this data may contain geographic characteristics that can be used in GIS.
Spatial Epidemiology.Net
Produced by the Imperial College of London, this site uses Google Maps and Google Earth to display international data on three main datasets: The global genetic epidemiology of pathogenic micro-organisms; Staphylococcal Reference Laboratory Maps;and Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis Maps. There is also a feature to map you own data using their geocoding function, and can display data for different years.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency
Data related to mental health facilities and substance abuse as well as suicide statistics can be downloaded.
US Board of Geographic Names
The Board of Geographic Names provides a search for domestic and international names of places. It references previous names with identifying and geographic information.
