SAS

Kent State University maintains a university-wide, limited seat license for SAS. All currently-employed faculty and staff, as well as currently-enrolled students are eligible to request a copy of SAS at no charge. The Division of Information Technology currently distributes SAS 9.4 software and licenses. SAS licenses must be renewed yearly. Note that SAS is only available for Windows operating systems.

University-Owned Computers

Please contact your local support person to receive a copy of the software or to renew your existing license.

Personally-Owned Computers

Faculty/Staff/Currently enrolled students

Visit software.kent.edu to download a copy of the software or renew your license.

If you encounter problems while installing SAS, you may bring your computer to the Tri-Towers Tech Help desk. Please see the Tech Help Desk Services and Hours before visiting.

What to do if SAS can't be installed on your device

Kent State students who need to use SAS but are unable to install the "desktop" version of SAS on their computer can alternatively use the free, cloud-based SAS OnDemand for Academics. SAS OnDemand for Academics allows you to access a version of SAS through your browser, which means you can access it on any computer with an internet connection.

SAS OnDemand for Academics is a great option if:

  • You have a Mac laptop and can't, or do not want to, install virtualization software to dual-boot Windows
  • You're using a public computer or a borrowed computer and are not able to install SAS
  • You do not have enough hard drive space to install SAS 9.4 on your Windows computer
  • You have attempted to install SAS 9.4 on your Windows computer, but the install process was unsuccessful

SAS OnDemand for Academics is free for students, but you must register for an account with SAS. Follow the instructions on the SAS website to create your account and begin using the platform.

SPSS Statistics & SPSS Amos

Kent State University maintains a university-wide, limited seat license for SPSS Statistics Standard and SPSS Amos. These programs can be installed on any university-owned computer at no charge. SPSS licenses must be renewed yearly, typically in August. SPSS Statistics is compatible with Windows and Mac and operating systems, but SPSS Amos is only compatible with Windows. (Note for Linux users: Support for the Linux platform has been dropped as of the SPSS Statistics v28 release. The last version of SPSS Statistics to support Linux is SPSS Statistics v27.)

SPSS Statistics and SPSS Amos are separate programs. They must be installed separately, and their licenses must be renewed separately. Renewing your SPSS Statistics license will not automatically renew your SPSS Amos license (and vice versa).

Currently, Kent State's licensing agreement only permits SPSS products to be used for teaching and research purposes. If you need to use SPSS for any reason outside of teaching or research, please contact the Division of Information Technology.

University-Owned Computers

Please contact your local support person to receive a copy of the software or to renew your existing license.

Personally-Owned Computers

Faculty/Staff

Faculty who wish to install SPSS Statistics or SPSS Amos on their personally owned computers may purchase an educational license through one of IBM's selected list of vendors.

Note that faculty and staff wishing to purchase Amos this way are only able to purchase it in a bundle with SPSS Statistics.

Currently enrolled students

Students can purchase the SPSS Statistics or SPSS Amos GradPacks through one of IBM's selected vendors.

To determine which edition of the GradPack to purchase, please consult with your instructor.

Public Computers on Campus

Most public computer labs on campus have SPSS installed. Information Technology has a list of public computer lab locations and hours at the Kent campus.

NVivo

Kent State University has a limited-seat license for NVivo for Windows and NVivo for Mac. All currently-employed faculty and staff, as well as currently-enrolled graduate students are eligible to request a license at no charge. Undergraduate students who need NVivo for a formal research project or for work as a Kent State research assistant should have their faculty advisor contact software@kent.edu to request a license on their behalf.

University-Owned Computers

Faculty and staff can request a license for NVivo on their university-owned computers, or renew their license for those programs, from software.kent.edu.

Personally-Owned Computers

Faculty/Staff and Currently enrolled students

You may request a license (for first-time users) or renew your license (for continuing users) through software.kent.edu.

For more information, contact Information Technology at software@kent.edu.

Stata

Kent State University currently does not have licenses for Stata. However, Kent State faculty, staff, and current students can purchase Stata at a greatly reduced price through the Stata Prof+ Plan (formerly Stata GradPlan). Orders are placed directly through the Stata web site, and once the order is processed, the software can be downloaded immediately.

Some departments may purchase Stata licenses for their faculty and students. Check with your department's local desktop support person before purchasing.

There are three major versions of Stata to choose from: Stata/BE (roughly equivalent to the former Stata/IC), Stata/SE, and Stata/MP. You can find information about the differences in these versions at Stata's website. For most coursework, Stata/BE will be sufficient. For research, theses, and dissertations, Stata/SE is preferred, especially if you are working with longitudinal/panel data.

JMP

The University’s licenses for JMP and JMP Pro are set to expire on May 31, 2024. After this date, you will be unable to use the software. Please make every effort to complete any work you have that requires JMP software prior to that date.

If you have any questions or concerns about licensing, please contact software@kent.edu. If you would like assistance converting your JMP data files to another format, or transferring your work from JMP to another statistical software program, please contact statconsulting@kent.edu.

Qualtrics

All Kent State University faculty, staff, and students have access to Qualtrics at no charge. Qualtrics is accessed through the browser, so you do not need to install any special software in order to use it, and you can access Qualtrics from any internet-connected computer.

To log in to your Kent State Qualtrics account, go to kent.qualtrics.com and log in with your FlashLine user name (no @kent.edu) and password. All Kent State users must login to Qualtrics at kent.qualtrics.com.
