When you attempt to Live Trace PNG files in Illustrator in order to create vector graphics, you may notice that even with a transparent background Illustrator still assigns a white shape around the image.
To avoid this, expand the Advanced section of the Image Trace Panel (Window > Image Trace), and check the box for "Ignore White". In older versions of Illustrator (like CS6) Illustrator will still include a clear shape around the outside of the image but you can quickly delete it.
