APA Style - 7th edition: Welcome

Hello and welcome to University Libraries APA Libguide! This guide provides information on using APA style to cite sources, create reference lists and more. In October of 2019, a new edition of the APA Manual was released. This guide focuses on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). If you need information for the 6th edition, please see the APA Style - 6th edition guide. Please note, this guide is provided for students and not for professional papers.

The purpose of this guide is to serve as a starting point with APA formatting. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association provides more detailed information and many excellent examples. The most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is the 7th edition. There are copies at the AskMe Desk (BF 76.7 P83 2020) for you to use in the building. If you are a graduate student I highly recommend purchasing your own copy!

There are many changes in the new 7th edition, below are a few of the major changes.

1. There are specific guidelines for student papers included in the 7th edition. These are different than the guidelines for professional papers. There are examples specifically for student papers.
2. There is only one space after a period in the body of the paper.
3. There are changes on how to write in-text citations for works with more than three authors.
4. More examples are given for how to properly paraphrase.
5. You now must include up to 20 authors for the items in the reference list.
6. For journal articles, you always include the issue number.
7. The way to write digital object identifiers (DOIs) and URLs have been standardized.
8. You can select from 6 different fonts.
9. You no longer include the location of the publisher.
10. When using a DOI or URL they should be live hyperlinks.
