COMM 15000: Intro to Communications: Finding Web Sources

Getting Started

Some important things to remember.

  • Web sites may not (and probably are not) the best sources of information for this assignment.
  • Wikipedia is a good source for defining your topic and getting ideas.  It is not a good source for content for your speech.
  • Web sites must be scrutinized closely for accuracy, currency, bias, and authority.

Internet Search Engines

For college level research, don't just Google!  Try one of these search engines instead.

Google Scholar Just like Google but for scholarly information.

OAIster  (WORLDCAT) is a search portal for digital collections of electronic books, online journals, audio and image files, and movies provided by the research library community. Users can search by keyword, title, creator, subject or resource type, and searches yield a detailed description of the resource and a link to the resource itself. Indexed content includes the Library of Congress' American Memory Project, various pre-print and e-print servers, and digital thesis and dissertation collections.

CiteSeer.IST - Computer and information science information from the Penn State University College of Information Science and Technology.

PubMed - Health sciences portal to the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

VADLO Search Engine - Search engine for Research methods, Online tools, Databases, Software, and Powerpoint Lectures for all branches of Life sciences and Medicine.
