The Basics of Supplemental Instruction

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a FREE series of group study sessions led by an SI leader. The SI Leader is there to help make sure you are on the right track and to offer support and guidance. The SI sessions meet two or three times a week outside of class to provide a supplement to the course lectures and to give students a chance to learn content in different ways. The sessions are designed to facilitate students working collaboratively to understand the course material in a relaxed environment and develop better study skills by discussing content, comparing notes, working together to predict test items, and sharing ideas for improving class material.

What happens in SI?

  • No re-lecturing - students, determine what is covered!
  • Find answers to your questions.
  • Review material and prepare for exams, focusing on how to learn and remember difficult and important concepts.
  • Develop study strategies on note-taking and organization to help you throughout college.
  • Use practice problems, quizzes, and handouts made by the SI leader.

What's expected of students?

  • Regularly attend class; SI is support for the course, not a replacement for lecture or faculty contact.
  • Complete all required assignments before attending SI sessions and bring your notebook & homework to sessions. Remember, this is not a homework session. You are encouraged to ask questions on any homework problems you could not figure out on our own, but we will not be doing the homework in the SI sessions.
  • Bring questions to sessions; participation in sessions is important to understanding difficult concepts. Be ready to share, participate, and ask questions of fellow students.
  • Regularly attend SI. Research shows that students who attend SI at least once a week perform better on exams and earn higher grades.
  • Relax and have fun!
