APA - 6th edition: Books

Books

To write a citation for a book you need the following pieces of information:

  • Author or editors (all of them up to 7)
  • Year of publication
  • Book title, including edition information if applicable
  • Publication information (city, state, and publishing company)

Examples (remember on the reference list these would be double-spaced!):

Manzo, A. V., Manzo, U. C., & Thomas, M. M. (2005). Content area literacy (4th ed.). Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley and Sons. 

Lomotey, K. (Ed.). (2010). Encyclopedia of African American education. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.

Thelin, J. R. (2004). A history of American higher education. Baltimore, MD: John Hopkins University Press. 

Book Chapters

To write a citation for a book chapter you need the following pieces of information:

  • Authors of the chapter
  • Title of the chapter
  • Year of publication
  • Book editor(s) information
  • Book title
  • Publication information (page numbers, city, state, publishing company)

Example (remember on the reference list these would be double-spaced!):

Mulcahy-Ernt, P. I., & Caverly, D. C. (2000). Strategic study-reading. In R. F. Flippo & D. C. Caverly (Eds.), Handbook of college reading and study strategy research (2nd ed., pp. 177-198). New York, NY: Routledge.

E-Books

To write a citation for an e-book you need the following pieces of information:

  • Author or editor (all of them up to 7)
  • Year of publication
  • Book title, including edition information if applicable
  • URL of the e-book publisher or doi #

Examples (remember on the reference list these would be double-spaced!):
