Guiding Questions
When considering how the library can support student learning in your online courses consider the following three big questions:
1. Library
Connections: Consider
links needed within your online course to connect to library resources. |
Can we provide a link
or contact information to the appropriate subject librarian? |
Can we provide a some
standard content connecting to basic library resources (e.g., Ask a
Librarian, KentLINK, Journal Finder, Course Reserves, Off-Campus Access
[vpn], Subject Guides, Research Databases, etc.)? |
Do you wish to have
the Meebo Widget available within your course (instant messaging reference
service)? |
Do you need
connections to specific library resources within your course to support
course assignments and learning outcomes (e.g., you have an assignment to
specifically asks students find journal articles from the psychology
literature: PsychINFO link is needed)? |
2. Library
Instruction:
Consider what instruction might be needed to support student learning and the
use of information within your course. |
What is the nature of
your research assignments (if applicable)? Talk a little about how students
are asked to use information within your course. |
If this were a
face-to-face course, how might a librarian provide instructional support for
you? |
Can you identify any information
literacy outcomes that fit into your course (whether explicit or implicit)? See
University Libraries Information Literacy Program Statement and Sample
Outcomes for more information—www.library.kent.edu/instruction. |
List identified
library instructional needs here (e.g., online tutorials, narrated
presentations, handouts, related-quizzes). |
3. Library
Content: Consider
content needed for this course. The library may already have access to
helpful content. Also, we may need to identify and/or acquire the needed
content. |
What textbook are you
using and who is the publisher? |
Do you have course
reserve needs? |
What materials do you
need (books, journals, video and other multimedia)? |
