Grant Requirements for Data: Grant requirements for Data

Funding Agencies policies

The release of a 2013 memo from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy directed all grant-making agencies to develop policy requirements on managing and sharing research data, making the data management plan a common funder requirement.

In general, a data management plan (DMP) for a federal grant should include information on

  • What data will be created
  • How the data will be described
  • How the data will be stored during the project
  • How the data and results will be disseminated
  • How the data will be archived

At the same time, many agencies have particular guidelines about how to describe and share data that are discipline-specific.  Be sure to review the specific guidelines for each grant-making agency.
