Transitioning from RefWorks at Kent State: Explanation for decision

Explanation for decision to move from RefWorks - transitioning before the end of June, 2017

At the end of June 2017, the current Kent State University subscription to RefWorks will expire, and the subscription will not be renewed. RefWorks access will be available for use until the expiration date.

Users should make plans and then back up their RefWorks content as soon as possible.

A number of key factors led to our decision to discontinue RefWorks and pursue alternatives.

  • In recent years, increasingly powerful, free alternatives to RefWorks have emerged. These include Zotero, EndNoteWeb, and Mendeley.
  • As these alternatives have improved, other major research institutions have dropped their RefWorks subscriptions.
  • New registrations to use RefWorks at Kent State dropped significantly from 2015 to 2016.
  • The cost to retain the subscription to RefWorks will be over $13,000 annually.
  • In the near future, the current version of RefWorks will be discontinued by its provider.
  • We learned from RefWorks in February 2017 that individual subscriptions will not be available going forward.
