Building Observation Project: Building Observation Program

The Building Observation Project (B.O.P.) is the next generation of the Adopt-a-Floor and Clean & Pristine plans. 

B.O.P. is designed to cultivate a greater awareness amongst  Kent State University Libraries' faculty and staff  for the status and use of upper floors of the library beyond those inhabited by KSUL offices. Additionally, B.O.P. will provide an extra layer of quality control for the care and maintenance of library spaces.

Here are some things you'll be asked to do, as a volunteer with the B.O.P.:

• Conduct an observational tour (walk-through) of one floor (floors 4-10)
• Notify Mark Pike or custodial services of spills, overflowing trash cans, broken or otherwise damaged furniture.
• Remove old fliers.
• Straighten up (push in chairs, move abandoned library materials to sorting trucks).
• Provide observational data on how the floor is being used, furniture needs, power and outlet use, cleanliness needs, etc
• Complete the B.O.P. form and submit it to Mark Pike following each observational tour.

The goals of Phase 1 include:

• Maintaining a library environment that is welcoming, clean, comfortable, and conducive to helping students achieve their academic goals.
• Engaging KSUL faculty and staff with the variety of library spaces in an effort to experience the building from the perspective of our users.
• Identifying and reporting any concerns regarding floor activity, cleanliness, or overall maintenance issues.

While participating in the Building Observation Project, UL faculty and staff are expected to:

• Commit to participate in the project at least three (3) times a week.
• Wear your official KSUL name tag. 
• Complete the form on this guide following your observation.
• Offer assistance and refer patrons to appropriate service points if approached while conducting your observation.

Other notes:

• Feel free to work with a partner.
• While it is not necessary to observe a floor at the same time each day, please do note the time and date of your observation.
